Creating the Conditions That Lead to Equitable Outcomes for
All Students
For the past ten years, in partnership with Lead by Learning (formerly Mills Teacher Scholars), the SEL Lead Learner Inquiry Group has been guided by the simple premise that if we want all students to reach their learning goals and realize their potential, then teachers need to be supported in building their skills and capacities to deliver the learning experiences that all students need. This means authentically seeing and treating adults as learners, cultivating adult SEL in service of building students' social, emotional, and academic development, and continuously holding equity at the center of this work.
Monthly sessions are co-facilitated by the SEL Team and Lead by Learning. A safe, professional, and welcoming culture is created that promotes curiosity, belonging, and sense-making. Practitioners use data to make learners' experience visible as they supportively challenge themselves and colleagues' learning. Equity is centered in the learning by continually returning to the learning of the most vulnerable students, and practitioners questioning their own assumptions and those of their colleagues.
Lead by Learning is a professional learning organization of the Mills College School of Education. They partner with schools and districts to support educators to deeply collaborate in order to disrupt inequitable practices and improve student outcomes. End of Year Reflections
We are excited, hopeful, and motivated for next year because OUSD Lead Learners are a passionate, inspiring, reflective community of educators determined to center students’ voices, assets, and experience for change! Teacher end of year reflections were grounded in the small moments: the sharing of data from a focal student, the power of a ten-minute think alone, and the opportunity to have our assumptions challenged. See the slides from the end of year learning celebration and browse our impact report.

2020-21 SEL Lead Learner Leadership Stories
With the unprecedented and uncertain circumstances of teaching virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic last year, teacher leaders in the SEL Lead Learner Inquiry Group needed more support than ever to get grounded in what mattered to them and to do so inside of a connected community of colleagues. During the 2020-21 school year, the SEL Team and Lead by Learning supported the SEL Lead Learners to develop and share their individual SEL leadership stories, as a way to ground them in their WHY, which then informed their daily decisions as teachers and leaders. Additionally, principals and SEL Lead Learners partnered to develop their school's SEL story to identify and communicate the school's SEL strengths and priorities within their school community. These stories became levers for resilience and change. Check out their stories!
